They discuss the feelings young people may have when others drink, and read a second series of stories about different ways to get help for problems caused by others’ drinking. They list resources in their community that people can go to for help, then practice what they could say if they needed to approach one of these resources for help. Family Education is part of the Sandbox Learning family of educational reference sites for parents, teachers, and students. The intermediate years are a good time for classes to visit science museums, or for scientists and technologists to visit classrooms. Children may be exposed to more of these experiences in the fifth grade than in earlier grades. Identify choices, behaviors, and practices that help support a lifestyle free from alcohol, tobacco, nicotine and other substances.

Programs of this nature are controversial, and some parents and educators question whether topics such as birth control and sexually transmitted diseases should be introduced in fifth grade classrooms. But most of the programs of this nature that I have observed are extremely sensitive to the children’s developmental status and cultural backgrounds. In the best settings, the teachers who present the material have received training in how to assess students’ readiness to receive the information and how to communicate it effectively. In Grade 5 Health and Physical Education, our students will further develop skills and strategies in a variety of engaging games.

Optional activity sheets support students’ work toward their goals with tips for getting enough physical activity and quick-and-easy healthy food recipes. In this unit, students will learn about the different types of pollutants and how they effect personal and community health. They will learn how to develop plans to help their community with environmental issues as they incorporate reducing, recycling, and reusing products.
