Rohm Gen 4: A Technical Review
The Apple MacBook Pro 16 is a premium laptop featuring Apple’s M1 Pro and M1 Max SoCs . It has a 16 inch display like its predecessor, the Intel-based Apple MacBook Pro 16 ; however, this newer model has a Mini LED backlight, and it can adaptively ramp up the refresh rate up to 120Hz for smoother motion. The ardroil sands campsite display is sharp and color-accurate, and it gets more than bright enough to deliver a true HDR experience. The keyboard feels great to type on, the touchpad is large and responsive, and the webcam’s video quality is outstanding, producing a well-exposed and detailed image for video calls. It has a wide port selection, including a full-size HDMI port, USB-Cs with Thunderbolt 4 support, and an SD card reader. Its M1 Max SoC can handle nearly every type of workload with ease, and due to its power efficiency, the battery life is fantastic, lasting 15 hours of light productivity.
In another benchmark to test the performance of Metal, we ran the Geekbench 5 Compute test. The new base machine managed a while the previous base garnered only a 13919. In our use, a physical escape key makes little difference — but for coders, it’s an entirely different story.
However, it is too heavy, at least for what I expect from a laptop. I’ve ALWAYS gone with the 15 inch model whenever I was due for an upgrade. I bounce between an at home office desk setup (where obviously the laptop doesn’t move much) but then I also travel with my laptop too, whether it be local or getting on a plane on a weekly basis. It is more for use in a desktop situation, I feel, than in a portable setting where you’re using it on your lap.
It feels exceptionally well-built, and it’s easy to carry around as it’s fairly thin. The battery lasts all day as long as you don’t perform any CPU or GPU-intensive tasks. Its high-resolution screen provides plenty of space for split-screen multitasking and displays sharp images and text. The keyboard is okay, but some people may find it tiring to type on for a long time. It can handle most student workloads, including demanding tasks like 3D graphic design and physics simulations. The Apple MacBook Pro 16 is better than the Dell XPS 13 for most uses; however, they’re also very different laptops.
Apple should add an option in MacOS to make the menu bar black with white text. That would make the notch completely invisible for all those people who ‘just can’t get past how ugly it is.’ They could also give the option to not use the extra space at the top of the screen. Once I realized that they didn’t cut out a notch as much as add tabs to the top of the screen my thinking changed. Seriously, it the notch on my iPhone took up the same screen space percentage wise, as it does on this laptop, I would hardly notice it. We see about 16 hours of work time in our testing so far, with periodic photo editing. Video editing cuts that down to about 12 hours — but we’ll be talking about this more as we spend more time with the machine in the coming months.
Whether compiling code, editing multi-cam video or doing 3D animation, MacBook Pro customers need pro-level compute power they can take on the go. But also, it feels a little thin without some of its promised features available at launch. Most notably, Monterey currently lacks support for Universal Control, a promising feature that’s designed to let you use one mouse and keyboard across up to three Macs and iPads. It’s a cool gimmick that could make it a lot easier to use an iPad as a second screens or move files quickly between multiple devices, but it’s not ready for launch. Instead, Apple has said that it will be added to Monterey in an update later this fall.
